Jennifer Lopez's 1st Spanish-Language Album is an Instant #1 on the Billboard
Jennifer Lopez recently said that her first ever Spanish language album Como Ama Una Mujer was a longtime dream for her to accomplish. And today her beloved project storms the Billboard Latin chart nailing the #1 spot in its first week while also making a remarkable #10 debut on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart. She also makes history with the highest sales of a Spanish album debut, inclusive of English and Latin artists. With this chart-topping debut, Jennifer joins an elite number of only five artists to ever land in the top ten with Spanish-language albums; they include Shakira, Mana, Don Omar and Selena. In addition, Como Ama Una Mujer sold more in one week digitally than any other Spanish-language release ever. Early chart numbers from overseas show amazing debuts in non-Spanish speaking countries like Switzerland (#1), Italy (#2) and Germany (#4).
The video for her first single "Que Hiciste" has been in the MTV TRL countdown for the last seven weeks. For the month of April, Jennifer will be the Artist of the Month on MTV's new Latin-focused network MTV Tr3s. Next week, Jennifer will appear on AMERICAN IDOL as the special guest on the Latin-themed show airing Tuesday, April 10th and will perform her single "Que Hiciste" live on Wednesday, April 11th marking the first time an artist will sing entirely in Spanish on the show. AMERICAN IDOL is the #1 English-Language TV show for Hispanics. Last week, Jennifer visited her hometown Bronx, NY to meet over thousands of fans who turned out to celebrate her new album. In early March, she held a special performance to give fans a sneak peak of her album at a Miami arena show. Internationally, Jennifer performed on major TV shows including the Echo Awards in Germany and Operacion Triunfo and Mira Quien Baila in Spain. Como Ama Una Mujer (How a Woman Loves), her sixth album, is sung entirely in Spanish and was produced by Marc Anthony, Julio Reyes and Estefano. The album, a true labor of love for the artist, is a state-of-the-art Latin pop effort that marks Lopez's growth into a new musical maturity. Lopez has recorded in Spanish before -- her first demo was called "Vivir Sin Ti," and in 1999 she had a massive international duet hit with Marc Anthony, "No Me Ames." Following her breakthrough Golden Globe nominated role as Selena and box office hits OUT OF SIGHT and THE CELL, in 2000 Jennifer Lopez kicked off a stellar musical career with her debut album On The 6. The album which has sold in excess of 6.7 million worldwide, spawned numerous hits including "Waiting For Tonight," "If You Had My Love," and "Let's Get Loud." In the same year, Jennifer won the Kids' Choice Award for Favorite New Music Artist and one of many ALMA Awards for Female Entertainer of the Year. In 2001, Jennifer Lopez made history when she became the first woman to have the number one movie and number one album in the same week when THE WEDDING PLANNER, co-starring Matthew McConaughey, was the nation's top-grossing film and her second album, "J.Lo," debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. The album -- which has now sold over 8 million worldwide -- led by smash hit "Love Don't Cost A Thing" was followed up by two number one Hot 100 pop hits "Ain't It Funny" and "I'm Real" featuring Ja Rule. While she was in the holding room, a fan approached the singer and reportedly asked her to autograph a CD. Jennifer Lopez turns lights down low in lush album done in Spanish
The buzz swirling around Como Ama Una Mujer (``How a Woman Loves'') is that it's Jennifer Lopez's first album sung entirely in Spanish. Big deal. She's always been singing en Espanol, starting with No Me Ames, the salsa hit with Marc Anthony (then just a twinkle in her mascaraed eye) from her 1999 debut, On the 6.
What's remarkable about Como Ama Una Mujer is how willfully out of synch it is with the latest trends in Latin pop music. There are none of the faux-R&B beats you'd hear on an album from Mexican pop group RBD, no ramped-up guitars suited for Juanes, and no remixed dance anthems tacked onto the end. Most notably, there's not a hint of the hip-hop that has propelled much of Jennifer Lopez's music. The big question is: Why now? There's not exactly a demand from Top-40 radio for the kind of sentimental music on Mujer. And unlike Latin pop stars such as Thalma and Paulina Rubio, who retreated to their Spanish-language roots after lackluster crossover success, Jennifer Lopez has always had a multidemographic following. Maybe this is her attempt to honor her Puerto Rican heritage or, if you're more cynical, another way to capitalize on the Latin-pop market. It has serious potential to do that, too. Mujer, in spite of its soft-focus romantic leanings, is a sincere album, organic in its instrumentation and introspective in its lyrics. Estefano's streamlined production keeps the bombast surprisingly in check for what is surely Jennifer Lopez's most tasteful and reserved album yet. The J.Lo on display here is not angling for urban pop hits so much as she's turning inward with unabashed romance. She's far too savvy to make a straight ballads album, though. Her idea of a love song is more classic, opting for string sections over canned synthesizers. Yes, that's a real-life piano opening the title track, with a minor-chord progression that sounds oddly similar to Randy Newman's In Germany Before the War. A delicate ballad with a simmering introduction, it opens wide to an over-the-top chorus that would sound best sung in unison by an arena of swaying fans, illuminated cell phones hoisted. Meanwhile, Por Que Te Marchas (``Why You Leave'') simmers until the refrain kicks in with swelling strings and Jennifer Lopez's vocals, which sound like they're lifted from an American Idol audition. Jennifer Lopez isn't known for understatement, but you wish she'd had the courage to leave this one half-baked. That approach works perfectly on Sola (``Alone''), which slinks along with ambient electronica. Que Hiciste (``What You Did'') is a detour on an otherwise lush, quiet album. Amid all the heartache, it's a diva-mode kiss-off of a lover who unraveled her happy home. But that's about all the trash-talking Lopez wants to do. Me Haces Falta (``I Miss You'') hinges on one of this year's most self-loathing choruses: (``I miss you/ Yes, I repent/ I hate myself/ I'm desperate''). The album wraps up with Adiss, a pretty ballad recorded live in front of an audience that immediately erupts into a sing-along. No doubt cell phones were hoisted and voices mixed in unison. Just as they should be. Posted on 01 Apr 2007
Jennifer Lopez signing Como ama Una Mujer in NYC
Jennifer Lopez, who has proudly declared herself "just a girl from the Bronx," delighted fans in her old neighborhood Wednesday by appearing at a local record store to sign autographs and promote her first all-Spanish album. A crowd of 500 gathered in front of the store to see Lopez, who was accompanied by her husband, Marc Anthony.
"I want to say thank you to everyone for coming to celebrate with me this very special day for me," Lopez, a New Yorker of Puerto Rican origin, said in Spanish. Continuing in English, she said, "It touches my heart to be able to bring this album back to my neighborhood, back to my home." The album, "Como Ama una Mujer," or "How a Woman Loves," was released Tuesday and was mainly produced by her husband. Jennifer Lopez has said singing in Spanish has been a career-long goal of hers. The pop singer-actress also has two Hispanic-themed films coming out this year: "Bordertown," a film about the killings of hundreds of women in and around the city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and "El Cantante," starring her husband as Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe.
