Judge rules Lopez must submit to deposition in South Beach idea-theft case
Lawyers fighting over whether Jennifer Lopez knows anything about the origination of a television series about Miami's modelling and nightclub scene may hear from the actress within weeks, though one lawyer promised: "I will not ask for her autograph."
U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman has ordered the actress to submit to a deposition by June 11 to answer questions posed in a lawsuit brought last year by a television writer who says the actress, UPN and CBS Television stole his idea and created "South Beach." Writer Jack Bunick claimed in a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan that the television series that debuted in January 2006 was too similar to a plot he described in 1999 for a pilot episode of a show that would have been called "South Beach Miami." In February, lawyer Orin Snyder argued for Jennifer Lopez in court papers that although she was executive producer, Jennifer Lopez was barely involved in the creation and development of "South Beach" and was only brought in at a later stage to "lend celebrity to the show." Snyder, who did not return a phone call for comment Friday, told Pitman he believed Bunick sued Jennifer Lopez and sought a deposition "for tactical reasons, in an apparent attempt to obtain some perceived leverage by targeting and harassing a celebrity in a case where she has no meaningful testimony to give and no legitimate reason for being named as a defendant in the first place." Sheldon Farber, a lawyer for Bunick, shot back his own letter to the court saying Jennifer Lopez was a proper defendant. "Her celebrity is not a shield for her to use to avoid direct testimony in a case in which she has not been named frivolously," Farber wrote. "I am unaware that one of the perks of fame is protection from legal process. She may be inconvenienced by an appearance at a deposition. I can assure the court that I will not ask for her autograph." The lawsuit in Manhattan sought unspecified monetary damages and an injunction barring further broadcasting of "South Beach," which has been canceled. Jennifer Lopez is among six defendants, including UPN and CBS Television, the companies that broadcast "South Beach." UPN was a division of CBS Television Stations Group and has since merged with the also-struggling WB to form CW, a 50-50 venture between CBS Corp. and Warner Bros. Entertainment. Jennifer Lopez finds inspiration in the bath
Jennifer Lopez found the inspiration for her Spanish-language TV mini-series while washing in the bath. The singer/actress' self-penned five-hour musical drama La Flor Palida is set to hit screens on US network Univision in the summer, and executive producer Lopez admits she dreamed up the show's concept during a long soak.
She says, "I was sitting there in my tub and the story started to come to me. The next thing I knew, I had written a 12-page synopsis." La Flor Palida will also feature tracks from Jennifer Lopez's Spanish-language album Como Ama Una Mujer. Posted on 20 May 2007

Jennifer Lopez's security arrangements tightened
Singer Jennifer Lopez's hubby Marc Anthony has reportedly tightened security arrangements for his wife, following threatening mails from an animal rights extremist, who has sworn to kill her in public for wearing animal fur.
It is said that the luscious diva did not pay much attention to the mails, but Anthony decided that the threats had to be taken seriously. A pal said that the musician has added two police officers to here visiting security to ensure J Lo's safety in public. "He has hired two off-duty police officers, in addition to her usual security team, to watch over Lopez whenever she makes public appearances," New York Daily News quoted the pal, as saying. However, the Hispanic star's rep denied the threat rumours saying that Lopez has always had the same security team. "[Lopez] has had the same security team she has always had," the rep said.
