Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony beat the odds
When Marc Anthony agreed to star opposite Jennifer Lopez in “El Cantante,” the famous singers were just friends who had once dated. But by the time the film went into production, Anthony and Lopez were married. And that, according to generally accepted Hollywood wisdom, is not a good idea.
“I got every warning from every famous actor I know: ‘Don’t work with your wife. It’s tough. The material’s tough,’” Anthony told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer during a break in a concert of songs from the movie he gave Friday on the plaza at Rockefeller Center. “But it was the total opposite,” he said. “After doing those heavy scenes — these two amazingly dysfunctional characters — we’d go home and say, ‘God, we’re normal, honey.’” The film is a biopic about Puerto Rican salsa pioneer Hector Lavoe, who defined a generation of Latinos with his music. But Lavoe, whose stage name was taken from the French for “the voice,” was as tortured as he was talented. He fought drug addiction, and his marriage to Lopez’s character, “Puchi,” had to survive his own infidelities. “He had such a strong image,” Anthony said of Lavoe. “I concentrated just on making him as human as possible. I didn’t want to mimic or imitate him; I just wanted to capture the man.” ‘Sound track to my life’ The 38-year-old Anthony grew up in New York listening to American pop music as well as the island’s distinctive Latin rhythms. Lavoe was part of that tapestry, but it wasn’t until Anthony was preparing for his role that realized just how important Lavoe had been. “I grew up with Marvin Gaye and Elton John, as well,” he told Lauer. “But Hector Lavoe was one of those figures that I realized, even when I was doing research for the movie, how his music was a sound track to my life. It was ever-present, it transcended all generations, and it’s just culturally significant.” “El Cantante,” which is Spanish for “the singer,” debuts on Aug. 3 and is the first film out of Lopez’s production company, Nuyorican Productions. In a Thursday appearance on TODAY, Lopez said that she thought it was appropriate that her first film deal with the heritage that helped make her one of the most influential entertainers in America. She had received the script for the movie more than five years ago, about the time she formed her company, and, she said, “I just thought to myself Marc Anthony was the perfect person to play this role.” She and Anthony met through their work in music videos more than 10 years ago. He went on to marry Dayanara Torres, a former Miss Universe, and have two children. That marriage ended in October 2003. Lopez, meanwhile, had had two brief marriages, a very public affair with Sean Combs, and a near-marriage to Ben Affleck. In June of 2004, he and Lopez married in a private ceremony at her home. Anthony has appeared in numerous films over the last 10 years, but his role in “El Cantante” is the biggest yet. He credits Lopez with helping him making the leap to leading man, and he plans to reciprocate. She's recorded numerous albums but has never toured before. When she does, later this fall, Anthony will be at his wife’s side. “I’m doing the movie thing now, and she’s walking me through this,” said Anthony. “Now it’s my turn to return the favor. We’re going out Sept. 29, Jennifer’s first tour, and we’re really excited about it.” Posted on 30 Jul 2007
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony debut as cinema duo
It may be the first time salsa singer Marc Anthony gets top billing over his superstar wife, Jennifer Lopez. In their new film "El Cantante" the couple play legendary Puerto Rican salsa star Hector Lavoe and his wife, Puchi. ABC News Now's "Exclusiva" recently spoke with Anthony and Lopez about their first time working together on the silver screen, and about kids, marriage and love.
The life of Hector and Puchi Lavoe hails back to a time before Latin culture boomed in the 1990s -- a mainstream craze that Lopez's career influenced. She was so hot she became the first person ever to have a No. 1 movie and album at the same time. Lopez's life was constant tabloid fodder, the prime example being her romance with Ben Affleck, which was so public the two became known simply as "Bennifer." A transformed Lopez is now away from the gossip pages and said she has left the Bennifer era far behind her. "Since I got married, the focus has really been my marriage and my life. It's nice because I had a run there where I was working nonstop. My whole life was about work, so it was nice to get away from that for a little while," she said. She has been married to Anthony for a little more than three years, and "El Cantante" marks her comeback from a self-imposed break from the industry. "It was a conscious decision to pull away and find out a different way to live where I wasn't on the cover of tabloids all the time& now I feel like my focus can be on things like ['El Cantante'] that I work on very hard and I'm very proud of& real passion projects you love and hope people enjoy." Hector 'Hated' His Voice The movie not only details the singing career of Hector Lavoe, it also shares the close relationship between the salsa star and his wife. Anthony said the closeness of the two had a deep affect on him during filming. "We had 11 hours of Puchi tapes she left us of just anecdotes, stories and her take on things. She said [on one of the tapes] that Hector used to cry in her lap when he thought about his voice and how much he hated it," Anthony said. "Imagine having to live as one of the most renowned vocalists and just hate it to the point where you would just cry in your wife's lap& her cradling him -- that hit me." The Lavoes went through many difficult times throughout Hector's career. Their portrayers agreed marriage can be hard at times, especially for celebrities. "It's always an adjustment when you first get married. You're talking about two separate lives becoming one, and that's challenging, especially for people like us who have such busy lives," Lopez said. "You're taking two lives and putting them together to form a family and& all that really matters is the two of you and the family that you're forming." It's their family that remains on the minds of many of the couple's fans. For some, the Anthony/Lopez love story was meant to be, as both are singers and actors with a sense of their Puerto Rican roots. As the world continues to wonder when we will hear the pitter patter of baby feet, the two have very different reactions to being asked about expanding the family they seem to treasure so much. "It's nobody's business. I don't want to talk about that," Anthony told us. His wife was a little more open. "When it happens, it happens," she said. "It would be a tremendous blessing." Only Anthony and Lopez know for sure what will come next for their family, but the world can get their fill of the superstars next week as they portray Hector and Puchi Lavoe in "El Cantante." Jennifer Lopez in GLAMOUR magazine
In the August issue of Glamour magazine, Jennifer Lopez talks about life, love and fashion in the.
Here is a part of the interview: GLAMOUR: Let’s talk about your style choices. Today your outfit is classic Nuyorican: hoop earrings, an armful of bangles and sexy white jeans. JL: My own style influences have to do with where I grew up, in the Bronx—I was wearing this when I was 12 years old, and I still like to wear bangles and big hoops! I’m also influenced by all the places I’ve traveled since then: I’ve been to Hollywood and great fashion shows and seen the world. Now I have a different perspective, and I mix that up. GLAMOUR: Who would you say are some of your style icons? JL: I look to the women who epitomize old Hollywood glamour, like Rita Hayworth. She had a way of making sophisticated clothes look sexy without ever seeming sleazy or cheap. GLAMOUR: So who is Marc’s favorite Jennifer, stylewise? JL: He loves seeing me in a glamorous gown on the red carpet, but his favorite Jennifer is just the Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx, when my hair is kind of natural and curly and I have just a little bit of eyeliner on and big hoops and jeans. GLAMOUR: What do you think is the sexiest thing about a woman? JL: Confidence: It’s the difference between the girl with the perfect body in a one-piece bathing suit, pulling at it and thinking she’s not thin enough or doesn’t have big enough boobs—and the girl who people call a bit overweight, but meanwhile, she’s wearing a bikini and guys are saying, “God, she’s sexy.” It all has to do with how you feel about yourself—it’s about projecting the attitude, I’m OK with who I am. Jennifer Lopez and hubby to embark on a joint national tour
Hispanic singer Jennifer Lopez and her hubby Marc Anthony are set for a joint national tour, if reports are to be believed. The tour, which will be launched after the release of the couple's film El Cantante, will have them perform at several venues across the country.
"They each will do their own Spanish and English songs and duet," Us Weekly quoted an insider, as saying. Meanwhile, the luscious diva has discarded the famous performing name of J-Lo in a bid to get rid of her reputation as a diva. The 37-year-old, known for being difficult and bad-tempered, said her alter ego was meant to be enjoyable but "got out of control and really crazy". Posted on 06 Jul 2007
